Born by the sea and sleeping to the sound of the ocean for the first 11 years of my life, I feel a strong connection to the ocean and sea life. And I've noticed as I've grown older how well I sleep in the salty air. Some day, I shall retire by the sea, on a bluff, overlooking the sea...
Until then, I've taken to bringing the beach & the sea into our home. I covered our dark green sofa and chair in bleached canvas drop cloths. Collections of shells are spread throughout the home, sitting in the window sills or round table in the living room. I brought back the mermaid painting and hung her prominently on the wall. This sudden beach house decorating was inspired by our family trip this past spring break. We took a road trip down to the Outer Banks in North Carolina, picked up my dad along the way from the airport in Virginia and headed straight for the beach bungalow we rented for the week. I love the sun bleached colors and rustic worn wood of the region. While my husband went windsurfing or on no-wind days, my family and I would take walks along the sandy beaches with the girls, collecting loads of beautiful seashells. We brought them back to the beach house and I would paint them. Here are just a few...
I have plans for these little beauties of the ocean and will share them with you soon...
I love these shells. The colors are beautiful. You've really captured the beauty of the beach. Now -- how is that little beach house after the hurricane? I hope the town you visited is doing well.
